One of the joys (for me) of going to the Village of Hope in Zambia is the absence of electronic noise. TVs are not in the homes, and we only hear the radio in the car. The evenings are spent visiting with one another, not sitting engrossed in the TV or surfing the web.

When I’m home by myself, I like to listen to music…. sometimes. But mostly I just like to hear the quiet. The refrigerator or the furnace makes sounds, but they’re not trying to capture my attention.

The one thing I do like about snow is the quiet. As it’s falling, it muffles the sounds of movement, and the movement itself slows until it stops. When the snow is fresh and the wind is still, there’s nothing like it.
