For years I’ve been seeing references to Brennan Manning and his book The Ragamuffin Gospel. But… for some reason I never got around to reading it. So many books, so little time.
When Borders was closing, I still had a big gift card to use up, so I went down before they finally closed to see what I could find, and picked up a copy. It’s been sliding around in my van since then, after I threw it in when packing for a trip, just in case I needed reading material. (Really? I’m going to drive 8 hours each way in a weekend and still have time to read? Who am I kidding besides myself?)
This week I finally opened the book and started reading. I’m going to be posting quotes from the book from time to time. I am only in the second chapter and there is so much that is refreshing in the book. He explains grace in a way that really captures our predicament and God’s love for us in spite of that predicament.
If you google the title of the book, you’ll find some articles warning about “heresy”. I looked at these charges and decided that these folks don’t get the point. That’s all I’ll say about that. God extends grace to them as well, even if they don’t see it; so I will do my best to do so as well.
